Finches

We have had a pair of Redpolls visiting all this week. They only feed on the spilt Nyjer seed under the feeders and aggressively see off the significantly larger Goldfinches.

For the last few years we have noticed the odd Chaffinch, usually female, which becomes parasitised with what appears to be a form of fungus on the leg(s), which increases in size through the winter. Pleased to report that we haven't seen any this winter, though it doesn't appear to inconvenience them. Has anyone else seen this and, if so, does anyone know what it is?
