absent friends

Birds are certainly far fewer in number inland since the hard weather I would say, though who knows how much this is due to mortality or a general exodus? I was covering a section of Cwm Brefi for a tetrad this week and only counted a quarter of the birds in total that I saw in November. Some common species were not just down in numbers but absent; Robin,Wren, Dunnock for example. I also saw 5 Stonechats back then but none this week. However, good birds were about inc. Kestrel, Peregrine, Dipper and 4 Crossbills.
Yesterday a Merlin shot over my garden in Llangybi.
