Whooper Swans

A life tick for me yesterday. Tuesday at dusk,I was told that the whopper family of whoopers had been disturbed by someone shooting on the flood plain. They circled infront of the house and the male unfortunately decided to land on the river ,with the female and juvenile coming down on the meadow nearby. They were visibly stressed by the incident and remained still and alert .The male tried several times to cross over to the other side of the river bank but couldn't get up as it is quite steep and high .He had to remain where he was ,and as it got dark and extremely cold I had to hope that they would somehow be reunited. This morning it was frosty but there was no sign of the family .Hopefully they had left early to graze quieter pastures.
