GULLS

Regular viewers of the blog may recall that during last winter and early spring Chris Bird, Laurie Wright and I noticed a couple of colour-ringed first winter Black-headed Gulls at Aberystwyth, either in the harbour or on College Rocks. They had been ringed as chicks on at a lake in west Berkshire the previous summer. Well, one of them, white ring 27C8, was seen by Chris on College Rocks on Wednesday. I will investigate to see whether it had been seen back at its birthplace in Berkshire in the intervening period. (He also noted 60 Gannets off Borth.)
This afternoon I managed to count 82 Mediterranean Gulls on the foreshore at Llansantffraed, including 11 juv. birds.
The Blackbird which nested in a robin-type open nestbox at the back of my house, which I mentioned last month, successfully raised one youngster. I don't think there was room for any more!
