Seabirds on the move

An enjoyable few hours with Arfon this morning watching seabirds in the south of the county. Arfon picked up a Balearic Shearwater off Llanrhystyd early morning, a little while later a Bonxief flew north. 400+ Kittwakes were moving offshore here so we decided to move to Newquay Head. An enjoyable couple of hours there produced 3 Arctic Skua, 2 dark phase and a light phase which gave a superb show chasing and robbing kittiwakes just offshore. Another 400+ kittiwakes here too with a few each of sandwich, arctic and common tern past as well as a single Little Tern.
100+ Mediterranean Gulls were at Llanrhystyd giving great views while other interesting gulls included a colour ringed Herring Gull and Newquay fish factory where we spent an enjoyable time learning large gulls in juvenile plumage.
Later on at Ynyslas, high tide produced an adult Little Tern, 10+ Arctic Tetn , 30+ Common Tern and 450+ Sandwich Tern. Wader included 42 Knot, 26 Sanderling, 621 Ringed Plover, 8 Turnstone and 432 Dunlin . Juveniles of all species are now building up and this site gives a great opportunity to see these birds at close quarters. A female Soarrowhawk was created chaos amongst the birds as it hunted the point.
