I'm not sure Iolo believed me when I told him the eagle often sat on a fence post on top of the eastern escarpment and others have been disappointed that it isn't so large as to turn day into night, so I took these record shots. First one shows location and second shows scale....you all know how big a fence post is! Its tail is a bit tatty but on close up you can just see the talon protruding which gives a clue to the size of its feet.
Down on the railway walk a sparrowhawk was working the hedges and eventually got a female blackbird for an interrupted breakfast.
I have a video narrated by Packham but filmed over 10 years by enthusiast Dave Culley: 'The Secret Life of the Sparrowhawk' which is a must see for anyone interested in raptors and all those who think sprawks are not worth the blue tits they eat. Elaine will have it on the next Bird walk as it is available on loan for a small donation (£1) to the Welsh Kite Trust. If you wish to purchase:www.sparrowhawk-island.co.uk £20
