Not a sighting at all, but this may be of interest.
I have an elderly mother who is more or less restricted to her armchair. She is keen on birds and particularly her blue tits.
For her 90th birthday my brother and I gave her a nest box complete with camera, and rigged it up for her.
She loved watching the bird roosting over the winter but now a pair has eggs it is giving her so much pleasure, and renewed her interest in life!
So it might just be an idea for a gift for other elderly relatives.
Reading up on blue tits I discovered the following in “British Tits” by Chris Perrins (1979) -
“female great tits can sing well and the female willow tit sings frequently....”
When I was doing bird surveys for the Nature Conservancy Council we were told that female skylarks also sing.
Most birders assume that only the males sing and most bird surveys are based on this fact. And yet it seems not be the case.
Any thoughts from others out there?
