Late postings

I'm just back from holiday, lots of emails to deal with, amongst them these that are now late....

Green Woodpecker & Scoter  21st June

Coed Dolgoed  17th June

A green woodpecker was calling at Coed Dolgoed at noon today, frustratingly I couldn't see it. Last week a marsh tit nest was sadly predated. I had been watching both adults feed their young for over a week. The hole was only 18 inches from the ground so it was easy for a mammal to get at it.

I recently converted 8 'open' nest boxes to 'holed' boxes (in 2 years none had been used) and the uptake has been positive with pied flycatchers, blue & great tits. Another 'open' box I reduced in size with a 1 inch front, put it 12 feet up a tree with ivy and today found a spotted flycatcher sitting in it which is great news. Hopefully they can get this brood off successfully.

Kittiwake 12th June

Don't know if of interest to anyone else but while watching kitywakes at Newquy bird rock on 10th june a kittywake in 1st summer plumage was visiting the ledges Birds in Wales suggest this age group gather on offshore rocks late summer early autumn. I thought they did not return to ledges until 2nd year. Also on thirsday 6th june a hobby was over the newquay lookout.

Dead Seabirds 11th June

I'm one of the seasonal wardens at Ynyslas and it was suggested that I get in contact with you in regards to some reports of dead birds that I've been given. I've been told of there being three or four Manx Shearwaters and two Guillemots found dead within 5 meters of eachother at Ynyslas turn carpark, and I've also found two dead Shearwaters to the south of the reserve above the high tide mark over the last couple of days.

I'm not especially clued up on the dying habbits of sea birds, so I was just wondering whether this is anything to be concerned about?
