Natural England and Natural Resources Wales are issuing thousands
of licences to kill birds. Nesting birds such as robins, starlings, blackbirds
and bullfinches are being legally killed, in spite of these birds being
protected by law. They
say that they only issue licences to “preserve public safety”, but many licences
are sought to protect farming, fishing and forestry interests too. Also, it’s
unclear what non-lethal methods, if any, are pursued before licences to kill
these birds are issued.
Care2 member Jacques has written a petition urging these Government advisory groups to immediately stop issuing these licences to kill. Jacques believes that some of these licences are being issued to building developers on the basis that nesting birds slow down the development process.
The Guardian reports that 170,000 wild birds, eggs and nests, including rare and declining species such as curlews and swifts, could have been killed under licences issued from these Government groups over the past five years. This has to stop.
