I was out yesterday morning doing a BTO BBS square traverse with nothing too exciting to record and was nearing the end and walking slowly up a single track lane with high bank/hedge either side, watching a pair of bullfinches feeding along the lane bank ahead of me. Then very unexpectedly and excitingly (for me at least), an adult Hobby flew low over the lane bank, flew up the lane ahead of me and then off across the next field seemingly chasing the swallows that were flying around the nearby farm. I’ve watched Hobbys before back over the Surrey heaths and hawking over the Thames near Reading where I used to live, but this is the first one I’ve seen since moving to Ceredigion.
I was walking up a lane just off the B 4334 just north of Brithdir, which itself is just northwest of Rhydlewis at about 08.45am. The survey square is SN3347.
There was also a singing willow warbler further down the same area towards the fishing lake.
