In reply to Ian’s query on the blog I would assume that most of the small waders are still on their way north. The persistent strong north-easterlies may have caused them to delay departure on their way to the Arctic. I have just bought and installed a new computer so I cannot look up if these high numbers are normal for this time of year but I suspect that these are very late. If the winds turn more southerly they may leave soon but it will be tight for them to successfully breed.

To add to Russell's piece above, I've had a quick look through the old Ceredigion Bird Reports and although spring passage of small waders usually peters out by the end of May there are a few years in which it continues into early June, sometimes in good numbers.
