Last spring while atlasing after dark around Llyn Blaenmelindwr I witnessed what must have been the same thing. A convenient verbal shorthand for the sound it made was a “warbling shriek” and I found it so described in one of the field guides. It made the sound at very regular intervals and could be heard covering quite large distances over the forestry. It appeared to be doing a circuit up to a mile across.
