Nightjars cont.

I heard a bird there last year and also a few years ago, but not during the wet summers we had recently (perhaps because I just didn't go up there). Some months ago I read a survey by Tony. If I recall correctly it was found that Nightjars in these clear fell habitats prefer trees of between 4-12 years old and that at these higher altitudes numbers could be limited by cold, wet summers. The forestry blocks above Llanddewi have been undergoing extensive clearance in recent years and are barely recognisable to me at times. There can't be much left to fell. Several km2 will be opened up. I would imagine that the next decade could see quite an increase in Nightjar numbers here assuming decent summer weather. When I went the other evening the entrance tracks were all closed to vehicles. To properly survey the entire area you'd probably need to take a vehicle round.
