Re: visible migration

I'm sure that most of us think of Chaffinch as a common resident, but reading Ian's account of migration along the coast this morning reminded me of a day ( 1st Nov 1998) when I became aware of large numbers of Chaffinch moving south over Aberystwyth.  I was on the prom at the time and went up Constitution Hill to get closer to the movement, where I enjoyed a couple of hundred birds going south at close range.
This late October-early November migration of Chaffinches has been noted often, but I find it fascinating to watch, and wonder where these birds have come from and where are they going?
