Visible migration
Arrived at Llanon soon after 8am and Arfon happened to arrive a minute later. We spent a very enjoyable hour or more watching large numbers of birds on the move southwards. Chaffinches were most obvious, there was a constant flow, perhaps 100 every 5 minutes, sometimes that number in just a minute. Possibly similar numbers of Starlings too but in fewer/larger flocks. We also saw a few Siskins, Meadow Pipits and Goldfinches and Arfon picked out, I think, 3 Bramblings. On the ground up to a 100 Linnets and Skylarks plus a couple of Stonechats and Grey Wagtails and 4 Snipe. Arfon then headed a little inland to get closer to the birds if possible. I thought of going to Cors Caron but instead my wheels lured me further up the coast, about 5 minutes north of Llanrhystud. Picking what looked a good vantage point I scanned around for quite a while but nothing doing. So round about 11am I returned to Llanon but everything had ended here too. Assuming the Chaffinches had been on the move since dawn I think it not unreasonable to suggest that very approximately 10000 had been visibly migrating overhead. On my way home I peeked over the hedge at Ty Gwyn pools which were solid with Mallard, about 1500. All, or nearly all, bred I assume? Among them was a single Whooper Swan. Wild or not, I'm not sure?
