The occurrence of the fungal pathogen Phytophthora ramorum on larch trees in Wales is widespread. The decision of NRW to fell all infected trees will have a major impact on our landscape as can be seen from the felling which is now taking pace at Nant y Arian. Just what the effect will be on the bird life is difficult to ascertain - larch cones are a great attraction to many finches and Crossbills. As far as the Red Kite feeding station is concerned - at the moment there does not appear to be a great effect as some 150 plus birds were present yesterday. However the same cannot be said for the birds on the feeder outside the visitor centre as numbers were greatly reduced.
